Hymn 477 - Then Jesus Came

Main message: Jesus releases us from the bondage of darkness, and fills our lives with glory.

Bible references:

  • V1. (Mark 8:22-25)(John 9:1-7)

  • V2. (Luke 8:26-35)

Keywords: alone, begging, blind, clutched, rags, shivered, shadows, Jesus, darkness flee, tempers, power, broken, tears, wiped away, gloom, glory, changed, stay, evil spirit, cut, possessed, captive, free

Interpretation notes:

  • The melody turns to the minor key in the description of the blind beggar’s condition.

  • It returns to the major key and reaches the highest note on the name ‘Jesus.’

  • The hymn is in two-part form.

  • The second part uses the same melody twice and repeats the last phrase of the first part at the end.

  • The word ‘changed’ can be emphasized with an allargando (slow down but get louder) and a fermata (hold the note longer).

477 (Notated Score)

"Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord." – Eph. 5:19
