Hymn 396 - I Would Be True

Interpretation notes:

  • In this five-system hymn, the keywords are set to dotted half notes. 

  • The first three systems descend first, then rise. 

  • The climax occurs later in each system: in the third beat of m. 3, the fourth beat of m. 7, and the first beat of m. 12. 

  • The final two systems repeat the same lyrics. 

  • In the fourth phrase, the melody begins and ends in a higher register. 

  • In the last system, the melody moves downward.
