  • V3. “He sets me free” (Psalm 118:5)

“He cares for me” (1 Peter 4:7)

Keywords: Jesus, my portion, my constant Friend, His eye, on the sparrow, I know, He watches me, sing, happy, free, tender word, resting, closer, sets me free, He cares for me

Interpretation notes:

  • Every two lines, the lyrics move from despair to trust and then to rejoicing.

  • By the fourth line, the lyricist quotes a Bible verse about being more valuable than sparrows.

  • The melody includes large leaps on ‘sparrow’ and on ‘free.’

  • A fermata appears on ‘free,’ and the next two phrases slow down.
