Hymn 290 - O Lord of Heav'n and Earth and Sea

Main message: Praise the Lord of heaven, earth, and sea.

Bible references:

  • V1. "Lord of heaven and earth" (Matthew 11:25)

  • V2. "only Son" (Zecharaiah 12:10)

  • V3. "treasure" (Matthew 6:21)

  • V4. "Our life" (Colossians 3:4)

Keywords: Lord, heaven, earth, sea, praise, glory, love, givest, all, Son, treasure, Thee, life, gifts, power, live

Interpretation notes:

  • The hymn is in 3/4 time, and the downbeats help highlight important words such as 'heaven,' 'earth,' 'praise,' and 'glory.'

  • Near the end, the usual downbeat pattern changes in the phrase 'Who givest all?' where the interval jump and dotted quarter-note rhythm place emphasis on 'giv-est.'

  • The musical setting draws attention to the giving described in the text.
