Hymn 288 - Work, for the Night is Coming

Main message: Work and serve God until Jesus comes again.

Bible references:

  • V1. "man's work" (1 Corinthians 3:13)

  • V2. "Rest" (Revelations 14:13)

  • V3. "Work, for the night is coming" (John 9:4)

Keywords: work, night, coming, done, labor, rest, fadeth, o'er

Interpretation notes:

  • The hymn repeatedly uses a dotted-eighth-plus-sixteenth rhythm on the second beat of the bar.

  • That pattern appears throughout the hymn and leads into the longer half notes on 'com-ing.'

  • The slower setting of 'com-ing' contrasts with the quicker rhythmic motion earlier in the phrase.

  • The text presents a call to work for the Lord until the night comes.

288 (Notated Score)
