Hymn 262 - I Want a Principle Within

Main message: A prayer to God for a guiding principle that keeps us close to Him.

Bible references:

  • V1. "godly fear" (Hebrews 12:28)

"quench the kindling fire" (Hebrews 11:34)(Romans 8:13)

  • V2. "grieve" (Mark 3:5)(Ephesians 4:30)

"apple of the eye" (Psalm 17:8)

  • V3. "Almighty God" (Isaiah 37:16)

"burden removed" (Matthew 11:28)

"hardness" (Ezekiel 36:26)

"awakened soul" (Ephesians 5:14)

"the wounded whole" (John 7:23)

Keywords: principle, godly fear, sensibility, help, catch, quench, filial awe, tender conscience, awake, almighty God, power, remove, drive, grace, whole

Interpretation notes:

  • The hymn is in 6/8 time.

  • The first, second, and last systems all use the same melody, which reaches a high D early and then moves lower by the end of each system.

  • The third system reaches its climax later, on C#.

  • This places emphasis on the words ‘wrong,’ ‘conscience,’ and ‘awaken.’
