Hymn 139 - Jesus of Nazareth Passeth By

Main message: Take hold of the opportunity as Jesus of Nazareth passes by.

Bible references:

  • V1. "Jesus of Nazareth passeth by" (Luke 18:13)(Mark 16:6)

  • V2. "Who is this Jesus?" (John 6:42)

  • V3. "deaf, and lame" (Matthew 11:5)

  • V4. "enters" (Proverbs 2:10)

  • V5. "heavy laden" (Matthew 11:28)

"love" (John 3:16)

Keywords: throng, pray, reply, Jesus, Nazareth, passeth, mightily, enters, stay, again, footprints, heavy-laden, grace, love, late, has passed by

Interpretation notes:

  • Lines 1, 2, and 4 use a similar melodic contour, rising in the first half of the line and falling in the second half.

  • Line 3 differs: its higher notes appear mostly in the first half, and the first statement of 'Jesus of Nazareth passeth by' stays mostly on G and rises only to B.

  • The final repetition of the title in the last line rises higher, creating a contrast with the earlier statements.

139 (Notated Score)

"Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord." – Eph. 5:19
